TUTORIAL || Dr. Helen Magnus [Sanctuary]
Welcome to this week's Fandom Friday, everyone! This week brings you a make-up tutorial for the glorious and impeccable Helen Magnus from SyFy's Sanctuary. I loooooved this show. I loved everything about it, the writing, the characters, the green screen, the kick-ass-ness, the actors and the oh-so-hot actors and now because I've become so obsessed with make-up, I've found a new appreciation for the make-up that was used on Amanda Tapping's character, Doctor Helen Magnus. So with all that being said... Shall we begin? See what I did there?
I wanted to do a video for you guys on how to get this look. I had it recorded and everything - I even tidied my room a little bit as I set everything up. Sadly, when I went to edit it, my laptop would not cooperate with me at all. It was like it was on strike or something. None of my editing programs would work and I could not find one that would agree with my laptop either. I spent all day yesterday fighting, crying and stressing and generally swearing at anything and everything. My laptop was even about to take up a new interest in flying. So at about 10pm, I threw in the towel, raised the white flag, the whole shebang and gave up and decided that I would take a different angle and take screengrabs from the video and then explain everything. Hopefully, I can explain everything well enough for you guys to understand but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Everything in this tutorial is from the drugstore so it's a very affordable look. You can find these items in any good Boots, Superdrug or equivalent of these stores. So, let's get started...
BASE
01 - To prime my face, I used Rimmel's Fix & Perfect Pro primer and rubbed it into my skin. I waited a couple of seconds for it to absorb. It has a creamy texture so I do recommend waiting a few seconds for it to dry in before applying any foundation.
02 - As I waited on my primer, I primed my eyelids with Rimmel's Exaggerate Undercover Eyeshadow Primer and blended that all over my lids.
03 - For my foundation, I used Rimmel's Lasting Finish Full Coverage Foundation. This sucker is supposed to stay for 25 hours but I've never been in a place to prove that it lasts that long. But Magnus is very busy and rarely sleeps so a foundation that lasts for up to 25 hours will come in handy, you know what I'm saying? I used a combination of the Light Porcelain & Ivory shades. I blended that concoction in with my Real Techniques Buffing Brush. I used a cheap beauty sponge from Forever21 to smooth everything out.
04 - To hide those blemishes and under eye dark spots, I used Rimmel's Hide The Blemish Concealer in Ivory. I created a triangle shape under my eyes and then blended that in with my Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush.
05 - To set everything and to keep everything in place - Magnus is flawless and her make-up does not budge! - I used Rimmel's Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Translucent and I applied that with Real Techniques' Powder Brush, using patting motions.
Check out my schnoz, people!
EYES
01 - To cancel out the blue-ness and veins of my eyelids, I took the primer shade from the Barry M Natural Glow 2 Palette. I just blended that in with my ring finger.
02 - For the base eyeshadow for this look, I took the grey shade from the same Barry M palette and applied that all over my lid using my Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush, patting that onto the lid.
03 - Using Bourjois' Smoky Stories Quad palette in Grey & Night, I took the medium shade on the right on my Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush. I took the smallest amount and concentrated this on the outer corner and blended it up and into the crease, blending inwards
04 - On a MAC 217, I took a dab of L'Oreal Paris' Color Riche Mono shadow in Macadam Princess and started to blend this into the outer corner and up into crease before blending across the eyelid, never going beyond the middle.
05 - To line my upper lash line, I used Rimmel's ScandalEyes Gel eyeliner on an angled eyeliner brush that I bought in Sephora Italia. I used this only on my entire lash line and didn't wing it out.
06 - With a clean angled eyeliner brush from UBU, I took the black eyeshadow from Collection's Little Mix It's All About The Eyes eyeshadow palette and went along that gel-liner to set it.
07 - Using the darkest grey shade from the Bourjois Grey & Night palette, I smudged out that gel liner and shadow combo with my Real Techniques Accent Brush. I used this brush to smudge the shadow upwards slightly and up into the outer corner.
08 - I blended everything further with my MAC 217 - I then take some of the darkest shade from Bourjois palette on the same MAC brush and blended everything into the corner and crease
09 - I then redid the eye-liner step with the gel liner and eye-shadow just to accentuate the eyes again
10 - I lined my tight-line and waterline with a black eyeliner from The Body Shop. I used their EyeDefiner eye pencil.
11 - I curled my eyelashes and applied L'Oreal Paris' Volume Million Lashes So Couture mascara to top and bottom lashes.
12 - Magnus has very natural looking eyebrows, though they are frequently hidden behind her fringe, so to add a bit of colour and shape to my eyebrows, I combed Rimmel's Brow This Way in Blonde through those brows.
FACE & LIPS
01 - To add warmth to my otherwise pale face, I used the Honey Bronzer in Fair Matte from The Body Shop. I used my Real Techniques Blush Brush and applied the bronzer to the parts of my face where the sun would naturally hit; my cheeks, temples, jaw line and neck. Magnus has a darker skin-tone to me so you can use the bronzer that works for you but she isn't overly tanned looking.
02 - For blush, I used my other Real Techniques Blush Brush with L'Oreal Paris' True Match Blush in Peach and applied that to the apples of my cheeks and blended it out. Magnus tends to have quite a rosy cheek. I'm not sure if that speaks of her Victorian roots where make-up wasn't as blended or seamless, but I went with the inspiration photos and they were rosy.
03 - Magnus frequently uses a 'My Lips But Better' shade of lipstick or a pale pink shade, it depends on her mood. When she's being a ghoul hunting badass, it's a 'better lips' shade. When she's being a doctor and a lady; pink. Well, that's the trend, I've noticed. So for this look, I picked MaxFactor's Color Elixir lipstick in Sunbronze. I applied it to my lips and then sharpened up the edges with my Real Techniques Detailer Brush.
And there you have it, a complete Helen Magnus inspired look.

Magnus loves herself a smoky eye, doesn't she?! These are all things that I happen to own and used to achieve this look, You can change and substitute anything that you want for something that you have. It just worked that way for me that most of the grey eye-shadows happened to be in different palettes. I doubt that Magnus would use eye-shadows from so many different sources for her eye make-up in the mornings.
Please let me know what you think of this look and if you try it. I would love to see your results. Until next time...
the eyeshadow looks really nice!
