TUTORIAL || Deanna Troi Inspired Makeup Look [Star Trek: The Next Generation]

 

As you may have gathered from a couple of posts this week, Deanna Troi is one of my favourite characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek in general too. I adore her, I adore Marina Sirtis and I always have and probably always will. I know that there are many fans out there that don't like her and that's okay - to each their own, but it's not going to change the fact that she's one of my favourites. Therefore, to close Star Trek Week here on this blog, I'm going to do a makeup tutorial inspired by the makeup that Deanna sported through the series and movies.

In the first season, Deanna's makeup was kept relatively unchanging. You would expect this because of the fact that she is working and she would have established her own makeup routine; something which was simple for her to do before her shift yet something appropriate and in keeping with Starfleet regulations regarding makeup. She wouldn't be going onto the bridge or into a counseling session with a cat-eye and a red lip or a seriously bold eye with epic lashes. She saved that for when she entered The Phase during Man of the People. Did anyone else sing, "Ooo baraccuda" a la Charlie's Angels when she strutted in? No? Just me? Okay, let's move on.

First season Deanna had what I could see to be a cut crease look with mascara and eyeliner to draw attention to those dark Betazoid eyes (created via the contact lenses that Marina wore). There wasn't a lot of action happening on the actual body of her eyelid that I could see throughtout the season. Then it progressed to a highly blended out smokey eye and it pretty much remained that way off and on for the rest of the series and into the movies, switching between warm and cool smokey tones as Deanna's style changed. There aren't a lot of opportunities out there to really look at her makeup. I certainly never noticed it until now that it was that way. Girl and Geek collide.

Anyway, this look is inspired by an amalgamation of all of those subtle differences in her look and I hope you enjoy it. It's a great look for work or on a relaxing day. I tested this look out whilst out for a leisurely drive and it worked nicely.

T H E   L O O K

You don't need to use exactly what I've used. These products are what I have in my makeup collection that I have made work for this look. Whatever you have will do the job as long as the colour relatively matches. With that being said, let's get started.

Also, as a bonus, all products used are from the drugstore so you can get your Deanna look at an affordable price.

Start off with your regular foundation routine. I have Irish skin which means that I'm very pale and therefore, not of the same skin tone as Marina Sirtis.  Also, I used a primer as my skin is on the dry side and I like to have a primer to add some moisturisation and provide a buffer to my skin. For my primer and foundation I used L'Oreal's Infallible Mattifying Primer and the L'Oreal True Match Foundation in the shade N1 - Ivory. To conceal those trouble spots, I used the L'Oreal True Match Concealer in Vanilla. Then to hightlight and brighten my undereye area, I used my Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (Fair). Once that was done I set everything using Rimmel Stay Matte Transulcent Setting Powder.

My eyelids need a base for my the eyeshadows and so I took the Collection Concealer onto my eyelids, blending it out with my finger. I set it into place with the Rimmel powder from before. This will create a even base for the shadows and hide the veins and redness on my lids.

I filled in my eyebrows first. Deanna has very striking and bold eyebrows and so I used my Soap & Glory Archery eyebrow pencil to do just that. I use the shade Blondeshell but you use whatever shade works for you. I didn't go for overtly bold brows because I am so pale and my hair is quite fair.

I took my B. Eyeshadow blending brush and with the slightest of dabs, took up some of the pigment from the L'Oreal Color Riche Mono eyeshadow, 101 Macadam Princess. This is a matte grey eyeshadow but you can use a cool toned brown eyeshadow too as Deanna's eyeshadow can look warmer than grey. With a light hand, I applied this first to the outer corner of my eye and blended it out and up into the crease using back and forth motions.

I took a little more onto my brush and repeated the process to intensify it that bit more.

Using a clean brush, I used my Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush, I buffed that grey shadow out so that there were no harsh lines whilst taking some of the shadow down onto my eyelid. 

Taking Panther from Wet N Wild, (any black eyeshadow will do) I used the blending edge of my EcoTools Eye Enhancer Duo brush to darken up my outer corner a tiny bit and took it up into my crease. I used the Deluxe Crease Brush again to blend it out.

I took an angled liner brush (I used my EcoTools Eye Enchancer Duo brush) and lined my upper lash line using Panther. The line here on Deanna is usually quite noticeable (especially in Star Trek: Nemesis - any screencap from it is used in the cover photo) but it isn't an intense black line. It's not a gel or liquid line, but a shadow/pencil line as it tends to be more subtle. Line the lashline with an even line from corner to corner - it isn't thin on the inner corner and thick at the outer like a cat-eye. It's a basic line.

Depending on what season or movie you watch, you can line your lower lashline with an eyeliner pencil. I used mine from Rimmel, their Soft Kohl Kajal pencil. I also lined my tightline with this to make my lashes look that little bit fuller.

After curling my eyelashes, I applied several coats of Seventeen's FalsifEye HD mascara* to top and bottom lashes.

Deanna's blush can be more pronounced or very subtle depending again on the episode, season and movie but it usually tended to be subtle. You can use whatever blush you like but I'm going to use Rimmel's Lasting Finish Soft Colour Blush in the colour 010 Santa Rose. It's a beautiful pale pink blush that adds just a hint of colour to the cheeks and the Real Techniques Retractable Kabuki brush helps to do just that.

Since Marina has insane cheekbones, I contoured my face a little bit using L'Oreal's Duo Glam Bronze. I took the bronzer on my No7 Contour & Highlighter brush and using the angled side, placed the bronzer just under my cheekbones a small way across and blended it out and up so that my cheekbones were defined. Deanna's blush and contour always looked seamless. I then took it to my temples, hairline and jawline. Deanna's complexion ranged from pale to warm throughout the run of the show and movies as her style progressed.

For lipstick, it's up to you and personal preference. Deanna pretty much wore most colours under the sun; nude, pink, red, mauve, brown-ish tones, you name it and in varying intensities and tones. Since this look leans more towards the later seasons and the movies, I opted for a lovely nude lipstick. I took L'Oreal's Color Riche Collection Exclusive in J.Lo's Nude though looking back I could've gotten away with Maybelline's Color Sensational lipstick in Velvet Beige. #liveandlearn
