BOOKS I WANT TO READ IN JUNE

I read six books in May and it wasn't until I sat down to create this post that I realised that I picked six books to read in June. One book is in a different language and so that book may take a little longer than a month to read and another book is a carry-over from my May TBR.

So, in June I have set myself the goal of reading:

✩ A Court of Mist and Fury - Sarah J. Maas
✩ Carve the Mark - Veronica Roth
✩ The Fates Divide - Veronica Roth
✩ The Way of All Flesh - Ambrose Parry
✩ Furyborn - Claire LeGrand
✩ Caramelos de CafĂ© - Paula Dalli

My reading lists are never set in stone, they are simply the books that tickle my fancy the most at the moment and I can easily deviate from my TBR if something else comes along or I'm in the mood for something romantic or something more fluffy because this TBR is heavy on the Fantasy genre. It is my favourite genre so it isn't all that surprising that a lot of the books that I read and want to read are in that category.

(CARVE THE MARK BOOK 1)
AUTHOR: VERONICA ROTH
PUBLICATION DATE: JANUARY 17th, 2017
GENRE: FANTASY

This book has been looking down at me from one of my highest shelves for quite some time now. I had nearly forgotten that I even had it until I was rearranging some books and I moved the flask that was hiding it. Oops.

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost.

Then Akos is thrust into Cyra's world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?

I'm staying away from the synopsis for this book for a moment because I don't want to read potential spoilers for the first book which I'm currently reading.

(RAVEN, FISHER AND SIMPSON BOOK 1)
AUTHOR: AMBROSE PARRY
PUBLICATION: OCTOBER 2ND, 2018
GENRE: HISTORICAL FICTION

Ambrose Parry is the pseudonym for husband and wife writing duo, Chris Brockmyre, a crime author and Marisa Haetzman, a consultant anaesthetist.

I won't lie, this book was a total cover buy. Just look at that gorgeousness! I was in Waterstone's and I'm one of these people that hates leaving Waterstone's without purchasing something. It feels like a physical impossibility. So, I picked this because it sounded interesting and I wanted something that could potentially scratch the itch I had for Jack the Ripper type murder mysteries. I paused reading this book about half-way through back in May because I wasn't entirely sure what the plot was. I'll pick it up again in June and finish it.

S Y N O P S I S
Edinburgh, 1847. City of Medicine, Money, Murder.
Young women are being discovered dead across the Old Town, all having suffered similarly gruesome ends. In the New Town, medical student Will Raven is about to start his apprenticeship with the brilliant and renowned Dr Simpson.
Simpson's patients range from the richest to the poorest of this divided city. His house is like no other, full of visiting luminaries and daring experiments in the new medical frontier of anaesthesia. It is here that Raven meets housemaid Sarah Fisher, who recognises trouble when she sees it and takes an immediate dislike to him. She has all of his intelligence but none of his privileges, in particular his medical education.
With each having their own motive to look deeper into these deaths, Raven and Sarah find themselves propelled headlong into the darkest shadows of Edinburgh's underworld, where they will have to overcome their differences if they are to make it out alive.

(A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES BOOK 2)
AUTHOR: SARAH J. MAAS
PUBLICATION DATE: MAY 3rd, 2016
GENRE: FANTASY

The continuation of the series, A Court of Thorns and Roses. I read the first book in this series back in 2017. I initially thought that I had read it in 2018 but my Goodreads says that it was 2017 which is shocking to me. It doesn't feel that long ago to me. I have such vivid memories of reading ACOTAR. Wow. That has shocked me. So it is about damn time that I continue on with this series. ACOMAF is the books that everyone raves about and declares it their favourite book in the series. I have high hopes for this book which is coined as a Persephone retelling; the tale of Persephone, daughter of Demeter, going to the Underworld for six months of the year to be with Hades, Lord of the Underworld.

Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.
Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

AUTHOR: PAULA DALLI
PUBLICATION DATE: JANUARY 30TH, 2018
GENRE: ROMANCE
LANGUAGE: SPANISH

Yup. Spanish. I want to read a book in Spanish. I own a couple of my favourite books in Spanish. I can read Spanish pretty well - well, I can read Spanish better than I can speak it. I took Spanish to A-Level at school and didn't do too badly. I got a B overall. I love learning Spanish and I take it back up every time I go on holiday and then subsequently stop after a few weeks. I want to read Paula Dalli's first book. In 2014 (?), my then-boyfriend and I were in Salou, Spain on holiday and the only English speaking channels on the TV in our room was the News. The Disney Channel was in Spanish but the programmes had Spanish subtitles so I could follow along with the action that way. Paula Dalli played 'Carol' in La Gira which follows the hijinx of a popular teen pop band, Pop4U as they tour. I've been following Paula Dalli on Instagram since then.

I know that this book will take me a while to translate as I read through it and I'm prepared to do that. I will happily annotate it and make notes as I learn new words and new expressions. There is currently no English translation of this book so I will have to do it myself. Google Translate, SpanishDict.com and my Spanish dictionary are going to become my best friends. I also have a Spanish friend so I can bug her when I get to a tricky sentence.

Just after turning eighteen, Valentina faces a future full of possibilities: soon she will leave her hometown of Altea to begin her life away from her family and move to Madrid for university with Melanie, her best friend. However, everything goes wrong. Her mother has just left the family home to move in with her new boyfriend, and now Vale must help her father and brother learn to take care of themselves before she leaves for university. She is only comforted by having breakfast in her favourite place, attended by the most handsome and sensual barista she has ever seen, Jon.
Valentina needs to feel like an independent adult and fulfil all of the plans she has been dreaming of for years, but Madrid has a surprise for her: one day while walking down the street she enters a kind of DIY pizzeria whose manager, coincidentally, is Jon, the handsome barista from Altea. They begin a relationship in which they will share their love for cooking and the dream of dedicating themselves professionally to it. To do this, she will unintentionally find herself part of a jumble of varied ingredients: new friends, unexpected reappearances and a feeling of lack of control when making decisions thinking that improvising a recipe always works well.

F U R Y B O R N
(EMPIRIUM BOOK 1)
AUTHOR: CLAIRE LEGRAND
PUBLICATION: MAY 22nd, 2018
GENRE: FANTASY

Confession: This is a book that I honestly forgot that I owned. I have very little space in my bedroom and so my bookshelves are all double-faced. There are two rows of books on every shelf and so as a result, I can forget what it behind the front-facing books. Furyborn fell to that fate until I was watching a couple of videos of YouTube where it was mentioned and the light pinged. I have that book. So, I'm going to read it this month.

S Y N O P S I S

To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first
One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable--until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire's heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.
As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world--and of each other.
